Scottish Gas Network Helps Red Squirrel Children’s House In Angus

3 Jan 2023

We have a significant garden area at Red Squirrel Children’s House in Angus. Over time, parts of the garden have become overgrown and unsafe for the children to use. It was difficult for staff to maintain the garden, while providing care and support for the young people in the house.

Wendy, one of the staff at the house, got in touch with Scottish Gas Network. Working with Julie from SGN, they managed to get together a team of volunteers in their North Region office to come out and do some much needed work in the garden.

Before they carried out work, Julie and other staff organised a fundraising event, raising an incredible £350 to pay for paints and other DIY supplies for the garden. Across two days in September, the team cut the grass, painted the cabins and fence, trimmed back some of the bushes and trees, weeded the paved areas and dug out a corner of the garden for sewing grass seed.

The first day was wet and miserable, however the team kept up high spirits, put on their waterproofs and set to strimming, cutting, and weeding the grassed areas.

On the next day, the weather was much better, and they completed the painting of the cabins, fences and the garden bench. A mini 360 digger was deftly operated by one of the bosses, as they landscaped an overgrown and unusable part of the garden ready, for sewing a new lawn area.

There is still some additional painting to be done to complete one of the cabins but Julie has promised to return when she is able to free up some time for her team.

When the painting’s complete and the grass has grown, it will provide an additional safe space for the Young People to use, especially during the summer months. We would like to thank everyone involved especially Julie from SGN and her team for all their help and hard work.
