Aberlour Futures Apprentice recognised as Scottish Apprentice Ambassador of the Year

10 Mar 2023

We’re proud to announce that Aberdeen Early Years Practitioner Declan Hoskins was named Apprenticeship Ambassador of the Year at this year’s Scottish Apprenticeship Awards.

The 22-year-old celebrated the news on Wednesday evening, viewing the awards ceremony online with Aberlour staff and his colleagues at Treehouse Bright Horizons nursery in Aberdeen.

Declan completed his Modern Apprenticeship with Aberlour Futures, a leading early learning and childcare training provider based in Aberdeen. Aberlour Futures offers Foundation and Modern Apprenticeship programmes, specialised in providing highly personalised learning support for young people looking to kick-start their career in childcare.

Now, he works as an Early Years Practitioner at Treehouse Bright Horizons nursery, leading the pre-school room, monitoring and supervising staff and ensuring his team delivers exceptional care while developing relationships with parents and carers.

As an apprenticeship ambassador, Declan played a key role in supporting and mentoring Foundation Apprentice school pupils through COVID-19, providing virtual work placements, giving constructive feedback on their coursework, and inspiring them to keep going. Two of those pupils were inspired to apply for Modern Apprenticeships and now work with Declan at The Treehouse Early Care & Education Centre at Robert Gordon University Campus.

Declan was thrilled to receive the award. He says “I’m delighted to receive this award from Skills Development Scotland. It’s an honour to be recognised among so many incredible apprentices across Scotland all working in different industries.”

He continued, “being part of a team and having people who believe in me improved my confidence. I love to share my enthusiasm for the job with others and support them too.”

Declan is currently working towards a Technical Apprenticeship in Social Services (Children and Young People) and hopes to do a BA in Childhood Practice.

Aberlour Futures Aberdeen Manager Susan Greig said, “Declan is very enthusiastic, but also calm and a great role model, who really relates his own experiences to other young people on a similar learning journey. Declan is an inspiration and I am very proud of what he has achieved.”

Declan’s assessors from Aberlour Futures and his colleagues at Bright Horizons nursery are proud to congratulate Declan on this achievement and wish him all the best for his future endeavours.
